25 Years of Innovation: Mark’s Impact on Logistics Technology at CLI
Mark Gambrel’s 25-year journey with Comprehensive Logistics (CLI) is more than a career milestone—it’s a reflection of how one individual can grow alongside a company, driving technological innovation while navigating the ever-changing demands of the logistics industry. Since joining in May 2000, Mark has played a pivotal role in transforming CLI’s IT capabilities, building systems that continue to advance our operations today.
“I’ve lived through CLI’s IT advancement from 2 plants with AS400 systems to 20 locations with innovative WMS STREME and building Machine Learning of recent years. There are always critical moments when systems are behaving badly and we as a cohesive CLI team have to figure it out to keep production flowing. Thinking back, I’ve enjoyed the experience of solving challenges with our exceptional team and advancing our customers solutions the most.”
— Mark Gambrel | Director of Information Technology, Comprehensive Logistics
In the 1990s and early 2000s, it was more common for employees like Mark to build long careers with a single company—often staying 10, 20, or even 30 years in one place. Even in more recent years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the average employee tenure was 4.2 years in 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2024, that number declined to around 3.8 years, reflecting a broader shift toward more frequent job changes across industries. Despite this trend, CLI continues to stand out by fostering a culture of loyalty, growth, and long-term opportunity. These long-standing careers underscore the deep bench of experience and innovation that fuels CLI’s continued success.
Mark Gambrel’s journey stands out for his 25-year career that reflects not only remarkable longevity, but also as a lasting impact on the evolution of our technology— from early programming to advanced warehouse management systems and machine learning innovation. He is one of many dedicated team members being recognized this year as CLI celebrates 30 years of business with family roots established in 1903.
Where Mark’s Journey Began: Programming the Path Forward
Mark began his career at CLI as a Senior Programmer Analyst. In the early days, his focus was on the AS400 platform, where he led a team tasked with rewriting the accounts payable system. But it didn’t take long for Mark to become deeply involved in the logistics side of the business—especially around 2003, when he developed a Small Lot system to support the General Motors (GM) program in Lansing, Michigan. That same period marked his early collaboration with GM in Lordstown, helping transition from an advanced broadcast to a real-time paint broadcast system in coordination with GM’s new paint shop investment.
Innovative Warehouse Management System: STREMETM is Born
By 2004–2005, as CLI began a major modernization effort under Steve Olender’s leadership, Mark helped shift the company’s legacy systems into more modern programming languages. His role evolved into IT Manager for the Victoria Road facility supporting Lordstown GM, where he managed site launches, help desk operations, and system development—most notably leading to the creation of CLASS, CLI’s first modern warehouse management system (WMS).
The first major launch of CLASS came with Ford Avon, and the experience proved transformative. The team’s learnings there became the foundation for what would eventually evolve into STREME, CLI’s now-signature WMS platform. With the integration of CLI’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (Solar Soft/CMS), STREME unlocked new possibilities in operational control and data visibility, becoming a backbone for CLI’s logistics excellence.
“What sets Mark apart isn’t just his technical expertise—it’s the way he mentors others, solves problems collaboratively, and brings our vision to life through technology. His legacy is deeply embedded in the systems and culture we rely on every day.”
— Steve Olender | Chief Information Officer, Comprehensive Logistics
Mark’s expertise and leadership extended beyond software development. As CLI took on sub-assembly work with Lordstown, he worked closely with Manufacturing Execution Software (MES) partners to ensure successful system integration. Business expansion to Spring Hill, Tennessee, brought new challenges, where Mark spent two years on-site helping launch the second sub-assembly plant and integrate emerging technologies into the WMS.
The Corporate Years: Building for the Future and Beyond
In 2016, Mark moved to Fort Myers to join the corporate team based out of Bonita Springs, Florida, marking a new chapter in his journey. Over the years, he has participated in nearly every major CLI launch across the U.S., demonstrating an unwavering commitment to execution and innovation. In 2018, he was promoted to Director of IT Operations, and in 2023 he advanced to Director of Information Technology, focused on WMS growth and mentoring the next generation of IT talent.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the systems and people I’ve worked with evolve and succeed,” Mark says. “We’ve built a strong foundation, and I’m excited about where we’re headed.”
Mark’s journey stands as a testament to his 25-year career, embodying not only remarkable longevity but also profound impact on our technology evolution—from early programming to advanced warehouse management systems and recent strides in machine learning. His leadership exemplifies CLI’s commitment to innovation, ensuring that we continue to push boundaries in logistics technology.
Outside of work, Mark enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends—a fitting reflection of someone who values both focus and connection.
