A Conversation with Melissa Dyer, CLI’s New Corporate Director of Materials
Comprehensive Logistics (CLI) proudly announces the promotion of Melissa Dyer to Corporate Director of Materials. With over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry and a track record of excellence at CLI, Melissa has been instrumental in shaping materials processes, implementing business intelligence tools like Power BI and supporting team training initiatives.
We sat down with Melissa to reflect on her journey, leadership philosophy and goals for her new role. Here’s what she shared: | |
Q: What are your top priorities in this new role?
|
Melissa: The biggest opportunity I see is grooming talent from within. Speaking from experience, our warehouse floor employees are invaluable resources—they bring daily hands-on expertise and often have the drive and ability to grow into larger roles. Recognizing and nurturing this talent is key to their personal development and our company’s efficiency. I have been excited to be a part of mentoring several people.
I’m also focused on refining our metrics through tools like Power BI to ensure standardized, actionable data across the organization. Lastly, it’s about enhancing collaboration across functional areas to create holistic solutions and optimizing opportunities by considering all viewpoints. |
Q: How does celebrating achievements reflect your leadership style?
|
Melissa: Celebrating achievements and milestones is a cornerstone of my leadership style, deeply rooted in my personal journey. It comes from when I started working on the floor, so I understand the importance of being seen and valued. Acknowledging someone’s great work or having a special moment like a birthday is meaningful. It’s not just about recognition; it’s about cultivating a supportive culture where everyone feels their contributions matter. This approach strengthens team morale, encourages engagement and builds a positive inclusive environment where people are motivated to thrive! |
Q: What lessons did you take away from your predecessor in materials leadership?
|
Melissa: Pat Brugger was an incredible mentor. His ability to listen without judgment was invaluable. One of the most impactful lessons was learning to direct rather than do. As you take on more responsibility, you can’t do everything yourself. Delegating tasks, trusting your team, and providing constructive feedback are essential skills.
I also admired how he managed conversations. He taught me to remove emotion from discussions, especially in high-pressure customer situations. That perspective has helped me stay level-headed and solution-oriented. |
Q: Any fun facts about your team or shared interests?
|
Melissa: Our materials team shares a love of hard metal music, which surprises people! It’s fun to bond over something unexpected, and it adds a unique vibe to how we connect and work together. When time permits, we do our best to do fun/interesting things when we travel to various sites. I find this very beneficial in building a cohesive team both inside and outside of work. |
Q: How do you spend your downtime when not traveling for work?
|
Melissa: I’m an avid reader, but these days I listen to audiobooks more often. It’s a great way to unwind while on the go. When home, I enjoy cooking and spending time with family, friends, and our two dogs. When traveling, I’m grateful for my husband, who takes care of our two dogs and sends me daily updates. |
